MSHA Open Singles Tournament
April 20-21, 2018
University of Minnesota Recreational & Wellness Center

No Tiger Woods like comeback in this tournament!  The dominant Andy Nett resides solidly on top of the Minnesota handball scene taking his ninth Open Singles title in a row.  There were some great matches in the Open: in the quarters David Schiller defeated Quinn Foley 21-17, 13-21, 11-5.  Then Ryan Pesch defeated Schiller 21-14, 20-21, 11-4 to get to the finals against Andy.  Meanwhile, Andy cruised through the upper bracket with no one scoring more than 10 points in a game.  Andy controlled the first game 21-16 as Pesch missed too many opportunities.  The second game was a different story: Pesch hit every opportunity he had and just like he wanted to -  soundly defeating Andy 21-9 setting up what promised to be an exciting tie-breaker.  Andy, however, had other plans and ran off the first 5 points. A couple time-outs could not stem the tide and Ryan went down 11-0 as Andy found another gear, as he often does. George Repine from Madison, WI took third in a very close match with Schiller 17-21, 21-20, 11-7 – Age over youth! Donovan proved too much for brother Quinn in the consolation finals – another thriller 21-18, 10-21, 11-10! Yes, Quinn, you got more total points.

John Laliberte almost broke through for the A Singles title but lost in an 11-4 tie-breaker to Adrian Anderson.  Adrian got a break with a no-show in the first round but earned his  path to the finals defeating Andrew Burkhart and Erling Holdahl while Laliberte defeated Issac Alberg and Henry Arneson.  Arneson defeated Holdahl for third place and Joseph Lallier defeated Joshua Pfister for the consolation honors.

Going the iron man route, Joseph Lallier also played in and won the B Singles.  In his six matches in the A and B divisions, four were tie-breakers, including the B finals against Isaac Alberg 16-21, 21-12, 11-8. Both Isaac and Joseph are products of father Mitchel Lallier’s youth program – great to see the kids progressing!  Kyle Schmitz defeated Vern Miller and Brendon Hoehn in a third place runoff.

Looks like some good competition coming up as the C Singles provided some entertaining matches.  Antonio Flores looks ready for the B’s as he walked through to the finals.  Tom Klapperich had to work a little harder to get to the finals and proved a worthy opponent.  Look out for these guys!  Vishall Gupta took third place over Austin Volling and Anthony Mazza defeated Alfonso Torrez for consolation honors.

The Novice Round Robin produced Theo Birkholz as the winner over Edgar Loez and Julia Buffalini.

In his first year of eligibility, Brett Broxey dominated the Super Master’s A (60+) Singles with no one scoring over 5 points!  Mike McQuillan looked exhausted after his marathon 11-9 tie-breaker semi final match with Mike Burke.  He did not put up much of a fight against Broxey. John Naksone took what was left of Mike Burke in the third place match.  Phil Kleineschay came back from a 3-21 loss in the first game of the consolation finals to defeat Bill Ingram 11-10 in the tie breaker, and yes, Bill had total points!

John Johnson won the Super Master’s B( 60+) round robin over Mike Dorscher and Tom Pearson.

John Nett won the Diamond Master’s (70+) round robin over Gary Rohrer and Greg Taylor.

The Women’s Open provided some very entertaining handball in a five player round robin – lots of great handball.  Mary Troullier defeated all to take the championship.  Maddie Kennedy took second and Carina Aguilar took third.

Once again, the University of Minnesota provided world-class facilities unparalleled in the country.  We are truly blessed to have such a great venue.  Thanks to all our sponsors and players that make all this such a great event.
