Minnesota State Handball Association Open Singles Championships
November 18-19, 2022
Life Time Fitness - Fridley

On a frigid November weekend, the action was hot on the courts.  In a somewhat return to normalcy, the Minnesota State Handball Association hosted the State Open Singles at the Life Time Fitness club in Fridley.  With a dozen glass back-walled courts, this facility is a great venue for the players and the fans.  With entries limited, several divisions ran as round-robins giving the players lots of opportunities to test their skills.  Seven tie-breakers, many in the finals, is a testament to the competitiveness.  John Armstrong, winner of the Golden Masters had two of them and gets the iron-man award!

In the OpenMark Doyle took top honors defeating his doubles partner, Shane Dunne 21-5, 21-15.  This is a 2022 State Championship sweep for Doyle as he and Dunne won the Open Doubles, as well.  Ryan Pesch took third and Luke Sandy won the consolation honors.

David Ceaglske defeated Josiah Hakala 21-7, 21-14 to win the A division.  He had a great match against Erling Holdahl in the quarterfinals 21-19, 21-18.  Holdahl went on to take third place and consolation was won by Clodagh Munroe in a great match against fellow Mankato State handballer Kevin Pattain, 18-21, 21-13, 11-6.

Tyler Lorbeski squeaked out 1st place in the B Division round robin against Cortney Edstrom: 21-16, 17-12, 11-6.  Antony Rigles took 3rd place.

Iron-man John Armstrong squeaked out 1st place in the Golden Masters with a tie-breaker win over James Grota 11-21, 21-12, 11-7.  Steve Johnson took third.

In the last match of the tournament to finish, Brett Broxey had a gutsy win over Don Reiter 21-18, 11-21, 11-7 to take top honors in the Super Masters.  Jay Spooner defeated tournament director Mike Kloos 7-21, 21-15, 11-5 for third place. Phil Kleineschay to consolation honors.

Kate Holtmeier showed her tenacity with a tough win over Carmen Skyberg 9-21, 21-16, 11-3 to take the Women’s B title.  Third generation handball player Nicole Schaumann took third place.

It was great to see both the players and many fans come out to a handball event.  We can only hope more and more return to this great game as we recover from the 2020 pandemic.   Thanks to the MSHA and all the players and the club for a first class event.
