First Annual Alumni Handball Tournament

The Minnesota State Handball Club had its first annual Alumni Handball tournament on Saturday, April 14th. The club has been in existence for five years, so there are alumni, finally. 26 current and former players participated in the tournament. With the World players of Handball (WPH) and United States Handball Association sponsoring the tournament with memberships, balls and shirts, a great event was sure to unfold. Fliers and information for the Minnesota State Singles championships, Tall Corn tournament, Race4Eight, and the Minneapolis Summer Handball programs were distributed. The seeding session of the tournament began with four pools of players playing round robin games of rally score to play themselves into their single elimination brackets. Then, there were four divisions of play where players played one game to 21 with a traditional scoring format.


After the conclusion of the single elimination bracket, anyone at the courts that wanted to play entered a 2-bounce tournament. The contestants were lined up by age (6 to 45) and divided into four courts. The six players in each court played to 11. The first three players to 11 in each court played a second game to 11. The winner advanced to the championship 2-bounce court for a final game to 11. The four court winners were 7 year old Zack Wells, freshman Joe Schnegelberger, sophomore Matt Larson, and coach/alumnus John Stoffel. Matt Larson was victorious in a very competitive match. His name will appear on the prestigious 2-bounce trophy in the Handball Club’s trophy case.


Once all the tournament brackets were done, the players convened at Jake’s Stadium Pizza for pizza and camaraderie. We are hoping this event becomes an annual occurrence.
