2010 MSHA Masters Doubles

2010 MSHA Masters Doubles

Minnesota State Handball Championships
Masters Doubles Handball
Central Courts, Columbia Heights, MN
March 5-6, 2010

A small but dedicated group met to contest the Seniors (30+), Masters (40+), Super Masters (60+) and Diamond Masters (70+) Minnesota State Handball Doubles titles.  The Masters division was organized into an A/B drop-down arrangement to accommodate the wide variety in capabilities of the players and still create competitive matches.  Everyone had a great time and we all saw some very good matches at the end of the tournament.

Only three teams entered the Seniors (30+) division.  Each team included at least one golden master eligible player and one included a super master eligible player. Andy Nett, in his first year of eligibility took another title with his father John.  Sheldon Silberman and Larry Larson squeaked out a second place victory over George Langhorst and Alan Leveille.

Tim Labey and Steve Johnson continued their early domination in doubles in 2010 with convincing wins over Lee Anderson and Glen Solin and then Mike Wells and John Stoffel before a very entertaining and tough win against Paul Dorland and Andy Hoisington in the Masters A.  Wells and Stoffel proved too much for Emil Weiler and Brett Broxey in the third place match.

Losers in the first rounds of the Masters A division dropped into the Masters B division where golden master eligible Phil Kleineschay and Mike Kloos dominated everyone. Brian Mahaffy and Brian Coonce took second and iron man Tom Bordenave and Tim Zigmund defeated Lee Anderson and Glen Solin for third place.

Rich Ryan and Greg Taylor attempted to defend their streak in the Super Masters but  Gary Rohrer (with two new hips) and second iron man John Nett easily dispatched them in the finals.  Paul Nelson and Jack Leveille took third place honors defeating John Stout and Jim Stephenson.  Tom Bordenave, playing in both the Maters and Super Masters divisions took consolation with partner Ed Simonet in a very competitive match over Bill Brown and Chris Foley.

It’s great to see the real masters – the Diamond Masters (70+) gentlemen still fight it out for top honors in the state.  Don Krocak and Arnie Wells never let their opponents get into double figures.  Skip Kiland and Ted Bergstrom took second.

The Central Courts once again provided a perfect venue for the Championships,
