Over 70 players gathered for the 44th annual Minnesota State Handball Association Open Handball Championships.  But the hero of the weekend wasn’t even a handball player.  Sandy Rude (Krisitina’s mother) jumped in and took command when Don Reiter collapsed due to an apparent heart attack just before the start of his second game with Jay Spooner on Friday night.  Sandy performed CPR and revived Don with the aid of an AED and kept going until the paramedics arrived.  Numerous people assisted calling 911, running for the AED and getting the University staff on the scene.  After transport to the nearby University Hospital, the sheriff told Steve Johnson “whoever did the CPR did everything just right and saved this man’s life.”  Thank you Sandy, a true hero for Don and handball.

In the tournament, Andy Nett took his fifth straight Open title defeating a very strong looking Ryan Maloney.  Ryan showed a lot but Andy has seen the best handball in the world and ultimately dispatched Maloney.  The up-and-coming Tyler Stoffel defeated Mike Gustafson for the third place honors.  New this year, the quarter-final losers played off for 5-8th place.

Rounding out the top ten: Ricky Ness defeated Joe Van Thomme for consolation.

The A division was a combination of both A and B players and accordingly modified to a drop-down format.  Bailey Chandler defeated Josiah Hakala for the A Championship and Kevin Pattain took the top honors in the B Division defeating David Abramson.

Adrian Anderson took another championship trophy for MSU in the C division defeating an experienced Vern Miller.  Ben Carlson defeated Jessica Bohlken for third and Tyler Edawards took consolation honors.

The fateful Golden Masters (50+) division turned into a three player round robin after Don left in the ambulance.  We are pretty sure a North Dakotan would not have won if Don could have continued to play.  We reluctantly let Jay Spooner escape with the trophy.  Brett Broxey took second.

Heated competition in the Super Masters (60+) division with another Fargo resident taken the top spot.  Dan Passolt snuck by John Nett in the three-game semifinal to easily defeat last year’s champ John Miller in the finals.  Nett took third over Brian Mahaffy and Mike McQuillan won the consolation round.

In the Super Masters B division Mike Erdmanczyk outlasted everyone for the championship.  It might have been a different outcome if Tom Bardenave had not been too ill to compete.  We’ll have to wait until next year!  Ed Simonet claimed third place and Tom Pearson won the consolation honors.

Nineteen youth players ranging from 4 – 17 participated in Mitchel Lallier’s youth handball program.  Thanks to Mike Gustafson and Andy Nett for their help and a short clinic.  The kids had a great time and Mitchell promises to recruit more players and bring 40 kids to the Fall Classic at the U.

It was a great tournament with help from the MSHA Board and the University of  Minnesota but without Sandy’s heroics it would have been a bad weekend.  Thank you again, Sandy!
