    Another Nett Dynasty

Who did Andy win the State Doubles title with this year?

    2017 MSHA Open Doubles

    Minnesota State Handball Association
2017 Open Doubles State Handball Championships
    March 24-25, 2017
University of Minnesota Rec. Center, Minneapolis, MN

Andy Nett has owned the MSHA Open Doubles this entire decade.  It took a tie-breaker in 2010 for his first win with father, John Nett.  This year, younger brother Tom took the place of father John but the results were the same  - an eighth state doubles title for Andy.  There have been only two games lost by Andy and John in that span of eight years – the tie-breaker in 2010 against Ray Miller and Matt Hiber and last year against Ryan Pesch and Donovan Foley.  Replacing experience with youth in Tom might get them the rest of the decade!  After a very entertaining beginning Pesch and Foley just couldn’t stay ahead of the Netts in the final.

Even the consolation round, won by Luis Bustos from Modesto, CA and Adrian Anderson from Mankato provided some great handball to watch.

John Laliberte Face Booked that he “road a Miller” to the title in A DoublesMichael Miller certainly carried the day, but John was not standing in the corner!

The B Division was plagued by lost entrants to injury and work schedules.  Last minute fill in Mike Kloos teamed with Tim Zigmund to claim first place, even while he had to hold onto the walls to stay upright.

D'Ante Ross and Clayton Edwards from Mankato claimed first place honors in the C Division in a fun round robin.

Kent Jones and Ray Miller outlasted Jay Spooner and Dan Passolt for the Golden Masters (50+) title.  Ray, Jay and Dan all played in two divisions so they got their fill of handball this weekend!

But Jay Spooner and Dan Passolt  defeated Don Reiter / Brian Coonce for the Super Masters (60+) title and took home the trophy (now that John Miller is on the injured reserve.)

John Nett took home yet another first place trophy winning the Diamond Masters (70+) doubles with new partner Greg Taylor.  It was good to see Jim Stephenson back to full strength but Gary Rohrer just did not look tournament ready.

The number of entrants was down but numerous round robins meant lots of matches for everyone.  Over sixty players participated and everyone enjoyed the great University of Minnesota facilities and traditional MSHA hospitality.
